Missing Anti-Tip Bracket: What It Means on Your Home Inspection Report
On this page
How worried should you be? Safety issue
Tip-over hazard: a child or adult can tip the range and be killed, Frigidaire's instructions warn. Have the bracket installed or re-engaged per the maker's instructions before using the range.
Your inspector found that the kitchen range isn't held by an anti-tip bracket: the bracket is missing, loose, or not engaged. The bracket is screwed to the floor or wall behind the range, and a rear foot of the range slides into its slot so the range can't tip forward when weight goes on the open oven door. A 2011 evaluation by U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) staff said the ranges involved in tip-over deaths and injuries were freestanding or slide-in models with oven doors that swing down.
Under the InterNACHI standards of practice, one of the standards home inspectors work under, inspectors needn't inspect or move appliances, so not every report mentions the bracket. If yours does, take it seriously.
Why It Matters
In a safety alert that dates from March 2011, the CPSC said a range anti-tip bracket can save you or your child from serious injury or death. It cited an estimated yearly average of 1,700 appliance-related (not just range) instability and tip-over injuries treated in emergency departments for 2006 through 2008, and said that for 2000 through 2008 it received reports of 13 deaths associated with instability and tip-over of stoves, ovens, and ranges, many involving children younger than 10. CPSC staff's February 2024 tip-over report counted 9 reported deaths involving a stove or oven from January 1, 2013, through July 31, 2023, and said counts for 2021 through 2023 are incomplete because of reporting lag.
The 2011 staff evaluation found two groups at risk: children from 15 months to 5 years old, and older adults. Older adults were hurt when they used the open oven door for support; children were typically trapped under the tipped range. Cookware sliding off the cooktop can add scald burns. All nine incidents CPSC staff investigated in depth from 2000 to 2008 involved ranges whose anti-tip hardware was not installed or not properly installed or engaged.
Makers say the same. Frigidaire's installation instructions (2023) carry a Tip Over Hazard warning: "A child or adult can tip the range and be killed." Frigidaire's say to verify the device is installed, re-engage it when the range is moved, and not operate the range without it in place and engaged, warning that failure to do so can result in death or serious burns to children and adults.
What makes it more urgent: young children or older adults in the home, or a range that tilts when you check it.
What to Do Before Closing
- Ask the inspector whether the bracket is missing entirely or present but not engaged, and how they checked.
- If the range stays with the house, talk to your real estate agent about asking the seller to have the bracket installed or engaged within your inspection contingency.
- Get the model number. If there's no bracket, the CPSC's 2011 alert says to check with the manufacturer whether your model should have one; some send a replacement at no charge.
What to Do After You Move In
Until the bracket is engaged, follow the CPSC's tips: don't leave children unsupervised in the kitchen, turn pot handles inward, move tempting items like cookie jars away so children don't use the open oven door as a step, keep heavy items off the open door, and don't push down on it or use it to help you stand.
Getting it installed: Frigidaire's instructions say installation and service must be performed by a qualified installer, and that bracket screws must not go into wiring or plumbing. Have one install the bracket to your model's instructions, always for a gas range, which means moving it on its gas connection. Then do the check below, and repeat it whenever the range is pulled out.
Also look up your model on the CPSC's recall site. In March 2022, for example, Danby recalled ranges over a tip-over hazard and risk of burn injuries when the anti-tip bracket wasn't secured.
Can You Fix It Yourself?
Checking it, yes; follow your own model's manual, and do it with the oven off and cool and nothing on the cooktop. Whirlpool's steps:
- Removable storage drawer: take the drawer out, look under the range with a flashlight, and check that the rear range foot is inserted into the slot of the bracket. A 1998 GE manual gives the same check.
- No removable drawer: put the outside of your foot against the bottom front of the range, grasp the control panel or the back, and slowly attempt to tilt the range forward. Immediate resistance means the foot is engaged. If the rear lifts more than ½ inch without resistance, stop and lower it gently: the foot isn't engaged.
- A snap or pop when lifting means it may not be fully engaged. Whirlpool says to check for anything keeping the range from sliding back, make sure the bracket's screws hold it securely, and slide the range back so the rear foot goes into the slot.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do all ranges need an anti-tip bracket?
CPSC staff said in 2011 that the ranges in tip-over incidents are freestanding and slide-in models. The CPSC said voluntary safety standards require manufacturers to supply anti-tip brackets with new ranges, and its staff said most provide one to meet a tougher stability test UL adopted in 1991. For an older range, ask the manufacturer.
The range has been fine for years. Is it really a risk?
Yes. Frigidaire warns that without the bracket, the range can tip if excessive weight is placed on an open door or a child climbs on it. In the incidents CPSC staff reviewed, older adults had leaned on the open door, and young children were found trapped under the range.
The Bottom Line
A missing or disengaged anti-tip bracket is a tip-over hazard that the CPSC and range makers say can kill. Check it per your range's manual, have a qualified installer put in a missing one, and re-check it whenever the range moves.
